In ecology, the `place' occupied by a species
in its habitat, including all chemical,
physical, and biological components, such as
the food supply, the time of day at which the
species feeds, temperature, moisture, and the
parts of the habitat that it uses (for
example, trees or open grassland). Ecological
theory holds that two species cannot occupy
exactly the same niche and coexist; they will
be in direct competition, and one will
displace the other.
